Maximizing Study Time

Strategic Planning & Time Management

  • Complete the syllabus early enough, leaving at least three months for your revision before the examinations begin.
  • During your study, try to understand every concept you are taught. Do not leave any concept in doubt. A concept not well understood will challenge you on the examination day.
  • During the last three months, spend time with the latest past examination papers and make sure you solve all questions in them.
  • During the last month, practice until you can get every question right in your first attempt.

Active Learning & Tools

Beyond time management, active engagement with material and resource utilization defines comprehensive preparation.

  • Engage with Active Learning Techniques: Avoid passive re-reading. Instead, actively interact with content:
    • Mind Mapping & Diagramming: Visualize concepts and their connections for better organization and recall.
    • Flashcards: Use traditional or digital flashcards (e.g., Quizlet) for spaced repetition to strengthen memory.
    • Teach Someone Else: Explaining concepts aloud clarifies understanding and reveals knowledge gaps.
    • Self-Testing & Practice Questions: Regularly quiz yourself and work through past papers to familiarize yourself with exam format and improve time management during the exam.
  • Leverage Available Resources:
    • Past Papers & Old Exams: Invaluable for understanding exam structure and expected knowledge depth.
    • Study Groups: Provide support, clarify topics, and offer diverse perspectives.
    • Course Materials: Review lecture notes, textbooks, and assigned readings thoroughly.
    • Online Learning Platforms & Tools: Supplement traditional methods with digital resources:
      • Quizlet: For flashcards, quizzes, and games.
      • Evernote/Notion: Organize notes, research, and set reminders.
      • Khan Academy: Offers free educational content, videos, and practice exercises.
      • Studydrive: Share and access student notes, summaries, and past exams.
      • Mometrix Academy: Provides free practice tests, study tips, and video lessons.
      • Grammarly: Assists with proofreading written assignments.
